18 August 2023
The City of Cape Town’s Safety and Security Directorate, in partnership with the Corporate Services Directorate, has embarked on a drive to recruit and train 1 000 candidates on an 18-month full-time Learnership Programme. Already hundreds of applicants have been put through their paces during written and physical assessments for the programme which commences in December 2023.
This skills development initiative aims to provide training in Traffic Services and the Metro Police Department (MPD)and forms part of the City's commitment to addressing the high levels of unemployment among the youth.
'It's exciting to see so many young people interested in a career in enforcement. It shows an eagerness to serve their communities and contribute to the safety of this city's residents,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
The recruitment process included written and physical assessments, interviews, medical assessments, criminal checks, and driver's assessments.
'The 18 months will be intense with extensive physical training, training on legislation, theory and practical training, among others. Once completed, the recruits will have acquired skills that enhance the possibility of employment within our different departments. It's not easy, but I know they will all do their best. I wish them well and look forward to seeing the impact they will make in our communities,' said Alderman Smith.
The programme is offered in conjunction with the City's Education and Training Development Department within Corporate Services.
'It's wonderful to see opportunities opening up for young people to be trained, and to possibly join the army of employed people in the City. For so many people, this opportunity is so valuable, and forms part of the cornerstone of Corporate Services in building a City of Hope,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, Alderman Theresa Uys.
